Ok Dell and anyone else who replied to my overheating question last night on my 9N. I took the radiator to the shop and it flowed very well but was about 50% clogged fron grass weeds ect. So I had it tanked and pressure checked it was fine and it is now clean too !!!!! !!! Also the guy at the radiator shop ask me if I had the right cap and I told him it seems to tighten down good. He said that a 9N cap has to be pretty deep in order to seal against the inside of the neck..... ....And sure enough my radiator cap does not go deep enough to seal. Also if you recall we had almost come to the conclusion the block might be plugged...I took out the drain in the side of the block and put a water hose in the top hose spot and water flowed great from the drain hole and the water pump.Does this eliminate the thought that it has blocked passages? The water was clean also not dirty gunky or rusty. Well tell me please that all these things I have mentioned would explain why my old ford is heating up hot within a few minutes of starting. Thanks for all your help. Oh and by the way I have a terrible time keeping my generator tight enough to keep good tention on the belt. I looked at another tracter and seen it had a strap that runs from the generator bracket to right near the govenor..... ..mine does not have this .....any other ideas on how to keep this thing from loosening up..... .thanks again gang.

I had an older car w/same problem-turned out water pump pulley was busted where it connected to the insides of the pump- pulley turned, inside blades didn't move-HTH

Ron,

I think you said in yesterday's post that you can't see much movement in the raditor coolant when it is running. If that is true, I would suspect the water pump or a restriction around the water pump.

My guess,
Danny

Ron, based on all of your posts so far, I would first make sure that the fan/generator belt is properly adjusted. When you have it tight, go about half way betwen the pullys and push down kinda hard. You should be able to press the belt down about an inch. Any more than that, it will probably slip, much less than that and you will ruin the bearing in the generator. If the belt is slipping, that would account for the overheating all by itself with nothing else wrong, so fix that first. Good luck with it. Repost with what you find.

Hey Ron:You said you was having problems keeping your fanbelt tight. My 8N did that and the right side steering arm was bumping the generator in rough territory.Check that real close and you may need to slide your front wheels out one hole and it will stop it.Hope this helps. It stopped mine from overheating.I like to have never found what was causing my belt to loosen up.I kept putting bigger braces on the generator and they kept bending..Good Luck...R.M. Just running a water hose in the top will not clean a block of junk in the water jackets. I have cleaned several blocks with my pressure washer at 3,000 psi being blown in the water jacket holes in the top of the block, drain plug and in the water pump hole. I have washed out junk for 15 mins on a block it seemed everytime I thought it was clean I would blast it in the top holes again and more junk would come out. The sediment builds up in these blocks over the years and it takes some serious cleaning to get it all out. This could contribuite to your problem with over heating in your engine. Mark H.

Ron,I believe Steve has put you on the right track. Also there is (original equipment, some models) a fan shroud to help in cooling. And here is one I'm not familar with but I've heard of two type of fans,One is a "pusher and the other a puller"??? .I don't think I'm any help to you tho. Sorry !

I have had this problem also in the past. Taking the drain plug and forcing water into it is good, but if you will remove the starter so that you can remove the two lower soft plugs, (freeze plugs) you will probably find a bunch of sludge that is filled up the cooling chamber around the cylinders. I have wash out and removed a lot of dirt, muck and rust out of the block! If you have a power washer, it will do a good job cleaning it out. The freeze plugs are around $.50 cents apiece.
Just my $.02 worth

You might have the thermostat in backwards, bad waterpump or pump belt slipping. Look for the simple stuff first. Good Luck.

Don't know what all you have looked at. Here are a couple things I have run into. A bad head gasket will cause gases to force the water out. You can see the gases coming out if you leave the cap off and run the tractor. Also the timing being off will cause overheating.

I think you answered your own question , a loose fan belt may not be turning your water pump fast enough . Also check your thermostat in upper rad hose .

I agree, Check to see if your Thermostat is installed in the right direction. Better yet, try running the engine without it installed to see if it makes a difference. Also, If your Generator belt is slipping you can bet that its slipping on your water pump. Just a suggestion from the "p-nut" gallery.
