New camshaft with new tappets?

I am in the process of overhauling the engine on my 49 8N. I have heard that the cam-shaft should be replaced if new lifters are installed. I plan on installing new adjustable tappets with new valves,guides,etc., but had not planed on replacing the camshaft. It looks good to me. Also, the cam gear and crankshaft gear looked good. (primary problem was warn out rings)Would like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks

I have been told, that if you use new lifters either with a new cam or used cam, that you should use a special compound that will help in breaking in the lifters. You can buy the compound at NAPA or any other parts store. Sorry, can't think of the name of the stuff. It comes with a new cam, or you can buy it seperate. Hope this helps.

You need not replace the camshaft unless there was a lifter that was gouged or heavily grooved, unless you are trying to build a brand new engine. Check your old lifters carefully. I would think twice about not replacing the timing and crank gears while you are in there, especially the timing gear which is softer metal. But is your goal to bring everything back to standard on your rebuild, or to get by on your rebuild with a limited budget?

To check the cam lift if the cam is out of the engine you might as well buy a Chinese micrometer for about $15.00 . Mike the distance across the camshaft at the top point of the lobe to the other side. Write the dimension down. Now mike across the smallest part of the cam. { 90 degrees from what you just miked. } Subtract the two to get lift. If one is a lot different, you know its worn.

If'n you were building a 7000 RPM, 160 hp screamer of a 2 liter engine used for racing, ya, maybe change the camshaft and the lifters.

But most of the time, replacing just the lifters DOES NOT require replacing the camshaft.

I'd at least check the "lift" of the camshaft lobes with a dial indicator micrometer. Your machinest should have one and know how to use it. If you are doing it your self, rent one from a machine shop or tool rental place. They are magnetically based. The I&T FO-4 manual should list the camshaft lift specifications. Or your machinest should know how to find it in his books..... ...Dell
