Im working on a 8n and have it taken all the way down, after close inspection I have found a crack in the engine block, down inside the exhaust valve port, the crack is not huge but it does go the whole length of the valve port area, is there any way that this can be fixed, hate to give up on this motor but also dont want to go into the poor house fixing it....Paul

Paul,

I would be intrested in what is on the OTHER side of the crack - if you assume it goes all the way thru from where you can see it. Also you didn't say which cylinder the exhaust port was for, that might make a difference. Another thing to know is can you see the ends of the crack?

There may not be much you can do with it, especially if you cannot get at it to do anything. Being in the exhaust port would mean that it is subjected to high temperatures, so the JB weld trick would be out. May need to do just as Dell suggested, forget it is there and go on and use the motor as long as you can before serious symptoms show up that would be because of the crack.

Regards,
Larry

Paul..... ...unless your crack in the exhaust port is leaking, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may just be a surface flaw.

Heres the deal, hot exhaust gases "contaminate" porous cast iron and makes welding extreamly difficult. This is why you can seldom weld castiron exhaust manifold successfully. I wouldn't spend my money trying to fix it, Sorry..... ....Dell

Don't know about the location of your crack... but, there are a lot of posts on cracked blocks in the Archives. I seem to remember one that sounds like the crack you have. Don't remember the suggested fixes though. My 52 8N has a cracked block on the left side that spans around 8 inches. Many suggested JB Weld. I removed the starter and sanded down the block all around the crack and ground it out with a drill grinder. I put in several thin layers of JB Weld, sanded smooth, and repainted. Looks good and can hardly tell any work was done. But I broke a fitting when reattaching the oil line. One is on order. Hope to restart the tractor this weekend. If I did a good job, I'll no longer have antifreeze leaking out the block.
