Dumb question = revisited

I messed up on my original dumb question and said that the auxilary (road) tranny lever was on the "right" It is actually on the left if you're sitting in the seat. So here goes again: I do mostly bushhogging with my '41 9n. It has an auxilary road speed tranny with a lever on the left side. Because I never use it on the road, I wanted to make sure that I was in the proper gear for bushhogging. I really can't tell whether it goes any faster whether the lever is up/forward or down/backward. and there is no indicators on the tractor which is fast and slow. So, which way should I put this lever for the slowest speed for 'hoggin'. Any help appreciated. And thanks to those guys who answered my previous question, even tho the information I gave you was wrong. Ron

You never know what you wll get. I bought my 52 8N and was told it had a Sherman "Low Drive." When I was talking to a dealer at an auction I mentioned that the "Standard first was too fast on my tractor. He told me to check if I had the "High/Low" Sherman and told me how to shift it, by going half way and pulling it out and back.
As the link they sent you shows. Low & behold I had a High/Low Sherman. The man that sold it to me was over 80 yrs. old and he didn't know what he had.

I sure learned a lot about the step-up tranny on my n. Thanks to each and every one who responded. I didn't know that it could be shifted in or out on the go. I'll try that..Ron

Ron..... ...you do realize that you can operate your 9N-tractor in 1st and over and 2nd and over and that 3 and over is the "road speed" gear.

BTW, 1st and over is faster than straight 2nd, but 2nd and over is not quite as fast as 3 straight.

Lever forward for straight, lever back for OVER..... ....Dell

once again from the house of Ed Gooding, if it is on the left side, then most likely a sherman. If it is a road gear, then more than likely it is a step-up version. Remember, since it changes the input shaft speed to your tranny, it changes every gear and the PTO shaft speed.

It was explained to me that some farmers liked the step up because you could plow and disk at the same speed as without the sherman, but you could keep the engine throttle lower with the tranny stepped up.

I have a sherman "step-up" transmission with the handle on the left side. Forward is low, center is neutral, back is high. Put the aux trans lever back (toward you), put the tractor in 4th gear (on a good road) and you should certainly see a difference in speed vs having the lever forward.
