My 8N lift is intermittant. It will work fine then lower on its own and won't raise. After a while it will again work normal. The fluid looks fine. Any suggestions?

Please don't put MMO in your hyd fluid. ONLY use hyd fluid.

First, realize that water gets into the hyds of Ns thru condensation and through other places (namely around the rubber boot at bottom of the shifter). That can cause the problem. Change fluid once per year.

If you pull the 6" inspection cover off the tractor, engage PTO and have someone raise and lower the 3 PNT you can inspect the hyd intake and exhaust cylinders on your pump. It looks like a little rocker arm on an overhead valve engine. One side is intake and other is exhaust.

If you see fluid squirting from around a cylinder, you have worn cylinder and it's time to rebuild the pump. Not expensive on your own, but it takes 1/2- 1 day if you don't run into frozen bolts, etc.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUTTA THERE while you do this check!

I had a similar problem with my 52 8N. Changed fluid minus 1 qt and added a quart of Marvel Mystery oil. Works find now.
