You might want to make sure the points are opening and closing.

Spent an afternoon chasing a similar problem on the neighbor's 601. I don't remember if they didn't open or if they didn't close. In any case there was power but no spark.

Double check the condition of the points and make sure they are gapped correctly.

Point adjustments on the &^*# front mounted distributor are a !@#$ing pain in the @#$. Last time I worked on mine, I ended up draining the cooling system and pulling the hood and radiator so I could see what I was working on.

Is it just me or do we read about this a lot! Why do people try to tune up a front mount distributor without removing it! It is SO simple! Ya gotta get over the fear of removing the distributor. It ain't like pulling the distributor on my '92 GMC. That is a can of worms. Not hard but, ya gotta know what you are doing. This front mount distributor is so easy you will laugh at yourself for doing it the hard way after you have done it once! Read the FO-4, it is a piece of cake!

OK, Ok, I'm properly admonished!!

I'll grab the flashlight and run out to the barn to find the two bolts right now.

You've got to forgive me - I'm basically a small block Chevy guy.

Bill, no need to remove hood , radiator, and drain fluid, two 7/16 bolts and that front mount dist. is in your hand, take it to the bench , its a lot easier. ( talk about doing it the hard way ) .

Yea, but it was a really nice day and I didn't have to help the wife paint inside.

Bill..... ...the tractor flat rate for removing the 2 bolts holding the frontmount distributor on is 14 minutes. Next time, try removing the frontmount distributor, and then setting at your workbench replace the ignition points and time the distributor. Your back up an running in 1/2..... ....Dell, well if you're a klutz, maybe 1 hr (grin)

Aaron..... ....You do realize that sparkies occure when the points open don't you?

All you've proved is that you have a semi-good coil (constant power to the bottom of the frontmount coil means the infamous ballast resistor and the coil primary are continious...read good) There are other reasons that the coil could be bad that take expensive sophisticated electronic test equipment to diagnose.

The points inside the frontmount distributor (gap = 0.015) can be eather shorting out or could be open. Remove your frontmount distributor with 2 bolts and take it to your workbench and open it up for inspection. Distributor drive tang is off-set and can only be re-installed 1-way, the correct way..... ...Dell
