Ok here it goes. Those of you who are on here alot have seen me ask questions and I have repaired alot of things on my 1941 9N. Well now that all the repairs are done and the tractor has fresh paint I mowed woth it some last night only to find that when the tractor has to work very hard it blows smoke out the oil filler tube so bad that with my pusher fan I am driving in a cloud of smoke all the time. So here it goes..... ...Yes I know it needs rebuilt or at the very least rings but is there anything I can do to get the smoke reduced until I have time and money for the tear down. I am running straight sae40 oil now so going up in viscosity would not be very smart due to the time it would take that old pump to get it to the motor. Oh and if you are curious the oil pressure is 35psi at start up and 21psi working hard and hot. My dry compression numbers are 65 to 70 psi across the board and I did not do a wet one. Thanks for any help.

I had an old Plymouth ( 56 ) that burned oil, a can of STP oil treatment helped .

Ron an equally stupid answer.....

Be-4-warned, this will require a new set of sleves and pistons when it comes to rebuild time and this is only a temp fix to get ya by.

My NAA had the same problem with blowing smoke and low compression. Play'd he!! geting it to start. I ordered new rings and set about putting them in. Come to discover that the engine had been bored (or was worn so bad) that standard rings had wider end gaps that the old ones. Not having the cash on hand for rebuild, I grabed the Val-u-built catlog and begain to search thru the different ring sizes. Turned out that a set of 3 & 9/16" rings roughly equal 60 over in a 3 1/2" bore. Given that I was at least 30 over and didn't want to risk money on them (30 over) I ordered and installed the 3 9/16" rings. Cut to fit and haven't had any problems yet. No smoke and starts right up every time. If you go this route, be sure that the ring set has a 1 pice cast oil ring, 3 pice oil ring won't work. (found out the hard way) U will also need head gasket and pan gasket. Take good care not to mix up rod and bearings they all "must" go back together the way they came apart.

Not anything material you can do to reduce the blow-by. Realize that oil pressure and ring condition are not related. Good for you to have that good oil pressure (enviable in fact) because it's oiling your system well at a time whenit needs it more due to the wear.

If the blow-by is causing you irritation, you can extend the oil filler tube and run it underneath the tractor so it's at least not blowing in your face. Just make sure you have a way to keep stuff from coming back into the extended tube and that absent a mesh filter such as in your breather cap, you will have oil droplets.

Just keep your plugs clean, don't bring her over 2000 rpm, or strian her too much and you'll limp along 'till your rebuild without throwing a rod or something else.
