Built a road with the N the other day, 15.5' wide X 300' long. Ordered up some pit run for a base. What they dilivered was HUGE rounded rocks mixed with smaller rocks / sand. I guess gravel is a regional thing (what the pit uses). When I lived in WA, pit run was large broken rocks that fit together nicely and made a great road base. This stuff is going to take more work than it's worth.

Poor N has to do a lot more grading now.

Hi Arne, I live in Southwest WI and here is what it is called here. The first rock that was dropped to build my road was called "breaker rock". Large 1X3 inch rocks. I drove on this for about a year to compact it down. Than I had that 5/8 inch rock spread over it. This filled in the gaps in the breaker rock. Still have to grade it after most heavy rains as the road is mostly up hill.

Gravel is a pretty generic term...without a sample of what you are getting, you can be surprised....Luckily, as long as the material delivered isn't organic, it should make a good base. I'd spread it, as mootly as possible, and drive on it for awhile or better yet, get a large vibratory roller to compact it...this will pack it down good. Then have a couple inches of chrushed stone, realy fine, spread and shaped.

Good Luck
Steve

I just got 74 tons of what they call "road base". Largest piece was less than 1.5" and most were 1". There was some fine powered rock in with it. They spread it out preety well too, but the 8N still has the final touches to do.

Yeah, the road mix is next. Sometimes called 5/8 minus.

I guess next time I will ask what I am getting and not assume I know. LOL

Thanks guys,

Arne

I think what you wanted is called 'stabiliser gravel' around here-basically crushed stone that jigsaws together and compacts under weight over time. Usually gravel companies will have a disply sample somewhere of what they stock.
