my friend just picked up a really old large tester,,,, he rebuilds magnetos, got this from a 85 yr old man that worked for a international dealer,, well my friend showed me it today, it is huge, it has a lot of wires coming out of the bottom,,it has a huge 220 motor,, it has a set up for a magneto, and a large panel that will show spark from the magneto,,,,, it will also check generators, regulators and starters,,,,, was wondering if anyone on the board ever heard of a machine like this and if there is literature available, the info I got off of it is this: ALLEN ELECTRIC & EQUIPTMENT KALAMAZOO MICH. TYPE 535 SER 33874

VOLTS 220 CYCLES 60

ELECTRONIC TESTER.

THANKS PAT,,,,, well it is sorta ot but at least it has to do with tractors,,

Reference to the Allen Electric Servicer and other Allen testers for servicing magnetos, generators, starters, distributors, & batteries are contained in John Deere service manuals: SM2000 and SM2029. These are available from John Deere dealers or by calling 800-522-7448.

Pat, I found out some more on the Allen Company. You can do a Google search by using: Allen Group Testproducts Division. It seems the company was bought out and merged with others being OTC and Bear automotive products today. I really doubt they have any info on your old tester. The book I have gives wiring diagrahms and instructions. Could make you a copy for a fee. The company wouldn't even talk to me about servicing or parts for my other tester made by Allen in the 1980's when I talked to them about 7 years ago. About all you can do is just rewire and rebuild them yourseld to suit your needs and be sure to unplug it when not using or use a seperate breaker or cut off switch. The old wiring in those could be a real fire hazard. I plan on rebuilding my machine someday with a variable DC motor controller or replacing with a 3phase motor using the variable speed control.

Pat, did you ever find info for the Allen Electric Servicer? I have a 40 page photo copy that I got from the company in 1988. The company was called Allen Group back then and still in Kalamazoo but they didn't make service equipment anymore. They said the machine and parts were obsolete as of 1952. You just have to find stuff at electric shops to fix them. Mine is broke again and needs the switches replaced. Someone told me the a bridge circuit would replace the motor controller or could get a DC controller. Have a E535 and another later Allen tester that just did alternators and starters. They are both broke and were always a pain to keep fixed. Converting them to modern electronics is the way to go and much more dependable. I converted another machine with a new variable speed motor and digital tachometer last year and it is twice the tester the Allen machine will never be. Good Luck.

I found the manual for the E-535 I used to have. Email me if interested in a copy. It's about 35 pages.

Pat, Usually when a company like Allen goes out it is bought out by another company. See if you can find out and ask them. Sometimes they keep the old drawings etc and you might get lucky. I know Sun is one of them. Try www.actron.com They may be able to help you.

Used to have an Allen E - 535 electric servicer... heck of a neat machine... burned with my shop in 1983... Repaired one for an implement dealer several years after that... Allen probably isn't around anymore??? I did notice several months ago there was an instruction manual for sale on ebay for a 535... who knows... one may come up again.

I know Allen Electric was still around several years ago. I don't know if they still are or not.
I did a quick internet search but no luck. Maybe someone else will know.

Pat..... ....I am aware of an "Allen" electrical test machine, but I don't know anything about it. I am also aware of a "Sun" machine specially for distributor work. Some of these machines are kinda self explanitory, but it NEVER HURTS to have instruction manual. Sometimes there are built-in instruction manual storage compartments and sometimes they even have the manual forgotten in them. Some times you're lucky. not me..... ....Dell
