How would I bench test a front mount coil to see that it is not part of my "no spark" problem?

I take the whole Dist off and test it on the Bench by using a 6V lantern Battery. Using an old sparkplug wire hook up one plug Grounded against the housing and you can turn the rotor shaft by hand and see that every thing is working as it should..I found this a lot easier than trial and error. When I put it back on the machine I KNOW it is going to work...

Rick, You can check the coil by removing it from the dist. Leave the wire connected on the top.. Use a Jumper to connect the Pigtail (Coil Connector) to the frame of the tractor. Turn Ignition KEY "ON" and look at ammeter ~ (near to)3 amps discharge is normal. Make sure you have a ballast Resistor if you leave the Key "On" for a long time.

If using a voltmeter connect one probe on the top wire connector and other probe on the Pigtail = ~ 2.6 Volts is normal.

Hope this Helps,
