I had a similar problem with my 49 8N. My problem turned out to be a clogged fuel line. It would start and run until the fuel bowl in the carb was empty, and then wouldn't start back up until enough fuel trickeled back in.

We struggled with our 8N for a few years. It would run for about and hour then die. It would not restart until it cooled, or so it seemed. We tried every single ignition system component but nothing helped. then I noticed that the centrifugial mechanism in bottom of the distributor had a problem. The timing is advanced by the centrifugal switch. Our switch had come apart. The timing in essence could have been anywhere! In fact it caused the engine to backfire and damage the starter. I cleaned and repositioned the components and boy does the tractor ever run better! Pin in the mechanism had vibrated out of the slider slots and hung up the mechanism. good luck.

I recently had the same problem and rebuild the carb and it was fine. I think it was related to fuel delivery. It would run fine for a while and then just die. After I could start it again within minutes. Rebuilt the carb and it had run great eversince.

When it dies check the ignition switch by jumpering around it. If it starts and runs replace the switch. A bad coil will also give that symptom and coils have been known to be bad out of the box.
