I posted this eariler, but having problem locating noise. With PTO engaged, brush hog running, going down hill, a chatter is coming from somewhere. It will only appear going down a small hill. I thought it might be PTO bearings, but not sure. Any suggestions?

Thanks

that there is a rotary harmonic that is developed going downhill when rear wheels are driving the tractor's engine and PTO/hydraulic pump, that just isn't there when the engine is doing all the pulling. The gear and shaft loading is just not the same. Is it harmful? Probably not, these circumstances don't go on for very long. Even with a big heavy flywheel, a 4 cylinder isn't a 'smooth' engine.

My '46 2N has sounded that way from my earliest memories, and it was LOTS newer in the '50's!

Russ..... ...if you are using (and you should be) an Over Running Coupler on your PTO output shaft to drive your brushog, I'd guess your noise is the ORC working. You do greese it don't you? ..... ....Dell

It has been greased on a regular basis. Could the overrun coupler be faulty?

... first whether you are using an overrunning clutch on your PTO. If not, get one because the chatter you hear is the hog trying to take over your tranny clutch and spin that clutch at it's whim rather than your engine taking control (causing sliping in your cluch). BAD BAD for your clutch and PTO plus the momentum of the hog is gonna be hard to stop.

If you DO have an ORC, the chatter STILL could be tranny clutch slipping due to worn pressure plate or improper clutch adjustment (check that first) or by a worn PTO.

If its not the overrun coupler, I suspect it is the clutch. It probably is due for a clutch overhaul. Thanks for the help.
