Steering Questions and Suggestions

I have a problem. The steering on my late 8n, it has the Saginaw screw and recirculating ball nut type, is getting tight (hard) when turning left. It has fluid in the steering box but it sounds like it is coming from on up the steering tube.

I have pulled the steering wheel and the top bearing looks and sounds ok. Can I add some grease to that bearing just to make sure? And then what is the screw for half way between the dash and the steering wheel on the steering tube?

I couldn't get the draglink disconected from the steering arms (btw what is the best way?) but did lift the front of the tractor to relieve pressure on the steering system and it is still tight (hard) going to the left.

What could be going on and how long does it take the average joe to rebuild the steering box?

Thanks for any and all help.

Ron

I got the same problem on mine - except i couldnt turn right. For the draglink removal: After messing up the rubber seal with a gear puller, i bought a tie rod end remover (fork) tool for $3.50 at a discount tool shop ($15 in Sears). that did the trick, but i wish i knew Willy-N's trick before that.
Taking it apart, the board's prediction was right: the upper thrust bearing was totally shot. pieces had disintegrated and fallen down into gears jamming them. Don B at Just 8N's got the correct bearings to me right away.

I have removed many and have found a trick that makes it a peice of cake to do! Un/loosen the nut on the back side of the arm till it is out at least 3/16s of a inch then place a peice if steel between the arm and the casting. I just use the flat end of a wrench and snug the nut up againt it. Then I hit the arm once and they pop right out of the socket, sometimes it takes 2 hits and they are not hard hits!! By taking the slop out of the arm and no place for the nut to go, by taping it the taper fit justs pops loose. This way you don't mess up the threads or the joint in the Drag link arm. Mark H.

The hole is an "aftermarket" modification to make filling the steering gear box easier. I've got one on my '50 8N....about a 5/8 inch hole that was uncovered...works, but a little rough.

As for removing the draglink, they are tapered and fit very tightly. Easiest thing to do is buy a "pickle fork". Sears has a set for about $40. I removed mine with a small gear puller (backwards) and a rubber mallet, but it was more work than it should have been.

The weak links on these steering boxes are the thrust bearings. You cannot get to the top bearing by removing the steering wheel. The whole top tube assembly has to be removed. This means removal of steering wheel hood etc.... Replace the thrust bearings. Do not use the plastic nylon ones...unless you want to do this again next week.
