I have a problem with the steering on my 50's 8n. It turns right with little pressure but requires both hands to turn left. I adjusted everything per the manual and put on new drag links and ball joints. Same problem.

How hard is it to rebuild the steering box? Any suggestions as to what parts to have on hand? I need to have it done with in a few hours as this is my grass cutter and the lawn needs cutting.

Any suggestions to start would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Ron

There is a bearing above and one below the "nut" that moves the sectors. usually the top bearing destructs due to lack of lubrication. It's possible that the ball-bearings in the "nut" have failed, but that is not as common as the shaft bearings failing. Get the two new bearings(avoiding the nylon type if possible)and a couple of grease seals for the steering arms. You'll have to pull the steering wheel, hood and dash and battery box to get to it. The biggest challenge is remembering how to orient the sectors back in "time."

Also, when I had the drag links disconnected there was absolutly no problem turning the steering wheel right or left.....can only assume because there was no weight.

Thanks again

Ron

Ron, check the spindle thrust bearings. If these wear the weight of the axle is down on the spindle with out a bearing and it will bind up bad. ray
