I am trying to see if my generator and cut out relay are good on my 9N 6 volt. When I put a meter across the battery terminals, it jumps all over the place. Is this because of the cut out relay the 9N has. How do I test this generator?

test the generator by putting the negative lead from you multimeter on the generator output post and the positive to the tractor (ground) and read voltage. You can do the same going into and out of the cutout relay.

And while we are on the topic, as I have preached before, I hate cutout relays. I went through two new ones in as many months on my 2N. Nothing kept my battery charged. Dell (see post below) told me about an after market voltage regulator replacement for the cutout (see link below). Now I run lights when I want and my battery stays nice and fresh.

Ron..... ...its not your cut-out relay, its your generator brushes. (man, talk about being sure of myself, grin).

Generally, your 3rd brush 9N 6 volt generator starts jumping around because of worn brushes and copper commutator insulation strip.

This it NOT TO SAY, that your cut-out is NOT BAD, its just to say the brushes are the most likely suspects and eazy enuff to check out by disassembly.

Naturally, this all presumes that the rest of the electrical system is okay..... ..... Dell
