I just wanted to relay my 8N story to everyone here. I've received a lot of great advise from people here that has helped me greatly. Thanks to all. I needed a "WORK TRACTOR". No offense to any collectors, but I did not need a pretty tractor I was afraid to get dirty. And it needed to be cheap. I bought a 47 8N Ford that appeared to be worn out. It ran, but everything that could be wrong was wrong, starting with a dirty fuel tank to a charging system that was a nightmare. Also the tractor had a crack in the outside of the water journal that had been patched. However there was no water in the oil or oil in the water. So I got it cheap, but I did not have faith this tractor would hold up to what I had in store for it. Wow, was I ever wrong. I spent a few dollars and a few days iorning out all the minor problems with the ignition systen, cleaning the fuel tank, as well as changing fluids, changing wires here and here and there. Gave it a good washing and put it to work at my place here clearing land. And I use the tractor HARD. It has made a believer out of me. I've worked it all day on the hottest Mississippi days and it performs better than I ever dreamed it would. It ain't pretty to look at. I'm deep in the woods with it most every day pulling stumps and running bobwire so it has its share of battle scars. But it has out performed what I expected from it the day I brought it home. It may die on me today, but it has made me a firm backer of old tractors. If I can find another one at a reasonable price, I may buy a second 8N.

I stopped to look at a much newer tractor for sale by the road and could not beleive all the stamped metal parts. I went home and patted my 8N on the hood. No one will make anything like it for the price in this age of disposable everything. Ford probably wishes they never made it. There is at least one on almost every rural road in the US.

Me too. I just cut the 4th cutting of hay on my small patch with the 8N I bought this spring. It has already raked and baled (with a baler that does NOT have a pony motor) three cuttings that is supplying my horses and a beef steer with food this winter. It is also currently fine grading my place and spreading gravel. When it's not doing those chores, it lifting / hauling product and steel for the fabrication business we started.

I too had to do some initial work on it, but it charges, starts, lifts when I need it to. It has it's little problems, but it also has a lot of heart.

Well, just remember the N's and the TO's are essentially siblings. Read the history of them and I think you will see the relationship.

Regards,
Larry

I agree Larry. They just don't makem like they use to. I've got two 8N's and a TO 20 and 30. Both tractors are a pleasure to own and USE! Fred
