Alternator idea

One of the things I don't like is the looks of an alternator on an old tractor. Has anyone investigated the idea of locating a small alternator, say from a motorcycle or something, that could be made to fit inside a gutted original generator. This would give the advantages of 12V and the look of originality.

The Japaneese are way ahead of us in the minature alternator field. (other fields too)

Kabota makes a generator that is on it's three cylinder diesels that is about three inches in diameter and is controled by an electronic voltage regulator located remotely from the alternator. I have never seen but one fail and it was the bearing worn out. I replaced the bearing and it's still going after at least 10 years of operation. Charges between 14 and 15 volts. Lots of amps too.

Rick, I am about half ways through restoring a 1940 IHC "A" and decided to make it a 12 volt setup, and didnt like the looks of an alternator. What Im doing is using a 12 volt generator off of a 1964 Ford Falcon car. I had to build brackets of course to make it fit, but sure looks good and only a purist could tell that it wasnt original. I also have a 1945 2N with a 6 volt set up and am going to leave it that way. Steve T

Steve, if you want to stay with a generator, we have a guy here in our area that will convert your original generator to 12 volts then the purists will have to look at the battery to tell.
