Hi everyone:

My 2n was involved in some heavy pulling and I hit a hole, something snapped and the tractor no longer moves. PTO also quit working and the shift lever kind of flops back and forth. I took the transmission fill plug out, pulled the pto shaft out to get a better glimps and I noticed the following: there is a bottom gear below the shifter that turns and churns the oil and when I step the clutch in, it quits turning and churning. There seems to be the correct pressure when stepping the clutch down. I can shift the gears ok and when I release the clutch, the gears in the tranny turn. when I view the shaft opening through the pto opening, I can see the spline shaft turning way inside the tranny and when the clutch pedal is depressed, it stos turning.

I am just trying to begin the diagnosis so that I get an idea where to start with this problem. I have never split the tractor before and have never been inside the workings of a tranny of any kind. any suggestions out there?

I have searched the archives and there is some information but I want to proceed with caution.

I had a similar experience this year and lost all go when pulling a stump. The bang was REALLY loud and had that very bad sense to it. I however had pto rotation and after looking in the transmission fill hole I saw all gears moving. I too had hoped that it was just the clutch. Turned out that I broke the coupler that wedged the pinion and sheared the end of the pinion gear clean off.

I too had never split a tractor but I am in the process now and have found it to be not that big of a job. One advice I would give you is to get yourself a 1/2" air impact gun. My rig has plenty of paint on the bolts and lots of rusty stuff too.

Take your time and be safe. This stuff is heavier than you think.

Best of luck

Rich..... ...ya ain't gonna like this. I think its your differential..... because.....

Your reports on the tranny (except for PTO) make sense. The engine input shaft drives the lower countershaft which stirs the oil and naturally stops when ya putts yer clodhopper down on the clutch piddle. When ya shifts and putter ingear, the countershaft turns output gears which turn the output shaft.

Which SHOULD DRIVE the differential to turn the rear axles to drive the tractor.

The only thing that don't make sense, is the PTO shaft not turning because you can see the PTO drive (countershaft output thru tranny) turning.

I'm not certain which shift lever is flopping around, the main tranny or the non-turning PTO shifter. Which could account for no PTO.

I can't think of an eazy diffy ringgear check without removing the left rearaxle trumpet, sorry..... ...Dell

Thanks for the information Dell. Another question. Is the differential a gear and if so, is it difficult and spendy to replace? Is it possible that something could have slipped off and not broken? The pto shift lever seems like it might be disconnected or broken inside. I have not taken the plate and lever off because as I said, I want to proceed cautiously. I am kind of cautious of taking things off and I don't want to screw it up more than it already is. I do understand the left wheel and trumpet because I have followed this forum enough to know of the prblems with leaky seals and assuming I can fix the problem, I am going to want to put new seals back on the left trumpet. Thanks again for your help - I am not necessarily a newbie but I am not a mechanic by trade.

You could pick up another Rear set of gears for about 100.00 plus. Not that hard to put it just work. Take those covers off and take a look it is only gaskets to replace and you might not have to replace them if they weren't put on with gaskit sealer. Mark H.
