Well, I haven't been around lately and I sure have missed this board. On July 23rd I took a fall down the side of the Delta IV rocket I was working on and very nearly "bought the farm". The next stop was 25 feet down and although I landed on my feet, the sudden stop was a rude awakening. My feet landed in the only place they could without breaking the bones in my ankles and feet. I then fell another 6 feet and landed on my back on a steel floor. After an ambulance ride and 30 x-rays I found out I had come through with no broken bones, just muscle strains and tendon damage. It was 7 more weeks before they discovered the Achilles Tendon in my right heal was completely severed and I had surgery last week to repair that. Now I can get on the road to recovery.
I now have the computer at home that I had planned for the last 2 years and would really like to hear from some of you. I never contribute much, but am a faithful reader of this forum. I got to use my 8N to mow the pasture the day before my surgery and I know it will be a while before I get to do it again.
I ask each one of you to be extra careful when working around a dangerous situation. If you get too comfortable, you can make a deadly mistake and it can happen in a heartbeat.
During my fall I realized what was happening and all I could think of was "Oh God, please help me". He did!

Have your wife or someone pull the tractor up next to the house and run the engine for 10 minuets or so. The "drum" of the engine will be good therapy for the soul. Good luck and fast healing.

well thank God,, was definatly the right words and person to be asking for help, .. I am glad to hear you are on the road to recovery,,, It is a tough road,, but it can and will be done, I was in a bad wreck over 2 yrs ago, was in bed not able to move for almopst 5 months,,,, but prayer and the help of family gets you through lots,,, , I am starting to get able to stay on my feet longer and you will too,,,,, it will be so tempting to get out there and do something,,,,, it will wait, take care of yourself,, and hope you heal fast and as painfree as possible,,,,,It really stinks to have a injury happen when you are doing something you are experienced at, and trained to do but somethings we have no control over, I was driving my tractor trailer, and a kid behind the wheel of a big farm tractor hit head on,, he was fine milking the next day,,,,, ,, oh well, the man upstairs was there watching, just like he was with you, good luck. you will become a wiz with the pc now that you have time to play with it,,,, I know before my accident and time off my feet I could not even turn one of these things on,,,,these people here will definatly make the days go fast have a good one

Glad to hear you are recovering. You were certainly blessed by the "big guy". Remember, an 8N is not demanding like a dog, it will wait for however long recovery takes. A little pat on the 8N hood might be good therapy for you. Maybe a little cruise around the yard would be also.
I'll be looking to see when you post that return to the saddle. ;>)

Glad to hear you are on the mend. Eleven years ago I fell ten feet onto a concrete floor and landed with both hands straight down. It shoved my left hand 1/3rd up my arm, dislocated and shattered my my right elbow and broke my nose.
I couldn't even wipe my own butt for 4 weeks. God, family and community helped me through it. You never know who your real friends are until you need them. I am fortunate to have lots of friends. God bless you and enjoy your friends while you recover. Allen (;^)

Yes, I've worked in the Decatur plant for three years. Our first rocket is due to go up sometime in early November. The largest version can lift 30,000 lbs. to a stationary orbit at 23,000 miles up. A lot of good jobs depend on it's sucess.

Drew is also a good friend of mine. We hired in together and went thru 4 weeks of pre-employment training together. He called me the other day and said he had also had surgery.
I lived on Rose St. in Cullman for 6 years before moving to Decatur.

Sorry to hear of your accident.

It sounds like it could have been much worse.

Good luck and I hope your recovery goes well.

Congratulations on coming through a fall like that. I won't say "It could have been worse" because that used to drive me nuts.

Same as you, I remember thinking "Oh God, please help me", as a semi turned left in front of my motorcycle. (5 breaks in toes, 4 breaks in fingers, two dislocated joints, 1 broken foot, 1 broken shoulder blade, fractured pelvis, 50 or 60 stitches, torn tendons in right hand)

All the best in the recovery stage. Post and let us know how you're doing.

One man at A general motors plant, was changing a florescent light 10 feet off the ground. He had over thirty years at the company. He Died when he fell. He broke his neck.. the more confident you are with your job, the more careless you get..

Safety must be Number one Priority

Hi Bama8N. I am glad to hear that you are on the road to recovery. Mortal life is truly fragile. Sometimes a close encounter with death makes us stop and reevaluate our lives and our relationships with our family, friends and most important of all, our Heavenly Father.

My wife is totally disabled due to a brain tumor. She stared death in the face and lived to tell about it. Her condition has made us both reevaluate our lives in terms of what is really important in life.

Thanks for sharing your story with us and I hope you continue to recover. Rick H. Ga.

Welcome back You know, it might just be a good time to rest and relax, and since there ain't no snow in LA, you won't need to be on the N for a while.
Now you can keep us all on our toes:-)

When I slid 15 ft and fell 9 ft I was not so lucky! I hit solid ground and broke my calanius bone in haft in my heal and also broke 2 more bones in that foot. I guess you could say I was lucky all the inpact was in one foot so I still had one to hop around on for 6 months. Still have problems a year later when I use it alot. So I know what you mean when you get to think about what is going to happen when you hit the ground. I only had enought time to say this is realy going to HURT this time! And it did!!! Mark H.

Since I'm a newcomer to the N-Board, It may not be appropriate for me to welcome you back, but welcome back anyway. I'll be thinking about your advice to be careful as I split my 8N later this month to replace the clutch, etc. Thanks. Hope you feel better soon.

By the way, I've been restoring my 8N off and on for about 18 months, mainly for sentimental reasons. It's basically the same model my grandad had in the early fifties that I learned to drive on. He even wrote a poem about his 8N that I may post some day.
