I was under my 8n today and found that the bolts that hold the radius rods to the front axel are both broken off. Do I just drive the remander out because they seem to be very hard to remove? I've got them soaking with penetrating oil right now.

Rich,I replaced my Radius rods this spring and found someone used some cold rolled steel for pins. The one side came right out the other side I had to remove the wheel spindle etc and had to heat and press it out with a jig I threw together using a bottle jack. This after soaking with PB and Kroil for weeks. I don't know how to post a picture so I e-mail you a pic of the jig.Good luck

wow never realized they were supposed to be pins, mine have bolts through them too, but I think I can see why. like was stated the pins seem to wobble the hole out of round a bit, I did a lil winterizing and finally got rid of some of the shaking and clicking from the rear of the radius arm, It only cost me 4 cents hahaha.. quick fix see how long it will last, but when I had it up on the jack I noticed the front axle part was loose too,,,, saw it was warbled out a bit,,,,, , shimmed with a piece of copper sheet,,, I think I will have to replace the axle someday, there seems to be some wear all over, but it is a working tractor, ,,,, I am thinking all this was worn for awhile, but i still got it for a decent price and the motor runs good so,,,, get another winter of plowing, and wood splitting with it and maybe tell her I will fix her next year,,,,, the same yr my wife of many yrs gets her engagement ring {hahaha} pat

Hi Rich. That makes me wonder; my 49 8N has pins through the radius rods similar to the metal pins on the top hitch of the 3 pt. The pins have a cotter key in the bottom. It looks like the pins were made for hole they go in through the radius rod. Are they supposed to be pins or bolts? Good question. Rick H. GA.

Pins were used during most of the 8N years but they went back to bolts and nuts since the pins rotated while using the tractor and wore the holes.

Yes they should just slip right out. You may have to jack up the front end to take the weight off it, they might be binding against the axle.

Mine were a real bear to take out. Unfortuantely, the radius rod bolts are dropped in from the top most times, so you really can't get a good solid pound with a hammer from the bottom. You may have to take the axle off, and turn it upside down to get enough sledge hammer effort to remove those rod bolts. My $.02

You can cut the heads off and drive from above, seems easier than pulling the axle.

I could not get a hacksaw blade under the bolt heads. If I would have hacksawed only a part of the bolt head and left any material, then I would have to end up grinding the bolt head completely off. I was going to replace the pivot pin and bushing sometime anyhow, so I pulled the axle.
