I am trying to change pulleys so I can have one that will accept my loader pump driveshaft. Does anyone have any ideas how to keep the motor from turning over when I try to unscrew the nut holding the old puuley on? Thanks

To remove the bolt that retains the front pulley use a steel rod drift of about 1/2" to 3/4" and a foot long or longer and using a two pound hammer stike the cranking slot on it's back side a couple of times and it will become loose enough to remove by hand most of the time or an open end wrench.

Done it a Zillion times!

Heck I never even had a wrench of any kind that would fit that bolt when I was working on them every day back in the early 60s. I was only making $50.00 a week before taxes for 55 hours and I didn't have any spare change to buy tools with. I think I'll take a picture of the old steel filing cabinet drawer that I welded a handle onto and used as my tool box for years and post it here.

You can also stick a big pipe wrench on the PTO shaft and let it press against the shop floor. Make sure the PTO is engaged and your tractor is in gear.

Pepepepe, Try the old rope in the cylinder trick.
Unscrew a sparkplug and stuff a 1/4" soft cotton rope "Otherwise known as the wifes old clothes line" into the cylinder with the piston down. About 4' of rope will do. Be sure to leave some hanging out for later retrieval. Then turn the crank till the piston squishes the rope up against the head. Hope this helps, Allen (;^)

I take it, that an impact wrench won't do it? I've removed nuts from other free rotating devices like alternators, etc.

Sounder..... .....not everybody has an impact wrench, let a lone one that will break 150 ft/lbs. You can also remove the starter and jamb a big screwdriver blade in the flywheel ring gear.

Now which is eazier???

I say stuff a soft 1/4" rope down a sparkie hole and you don't even have to worry what stroke the crankshaft is on or worry wheather you are tightening or loosing. The rope trick always works and don't scratch nuttin..... ..... Dell

I sometimes get spoiled. I forget that since I work at a road construction company that everyone can't walk out to the mechanic and borrow the 1" air gun, etc.
