I'm taking apart the lift on my 49 8N and I wanted to show a picture of what can happen when you use too much torque trying to remove the yoke from the back side of the big spring on the lift. When the lift was still on the tractor I sprayed PB blaster at the threads (as best I could) many times and keep whacken it with a hammer. I finally put about a 2 foot bar in the yoke and leaned on it hoping nothing would break. It finally did move about 1/8 of a turn but it didn’t feel right, so I stopped. I then pulled the lift off the tractor and keep spraying PB Blaster on it. Because I had the lift off I could stand it up on it’s end with the yoke down, that way I could spray the PB Blaster right in the end of the yoke where the plunger screws in and it wouldn’t run out as there is a space for the BP Blaster to accumulate. I kept spraying about once a day over a 3 week period and it finally did the trick. When I took the big spring and the anchor plate off I could see what had happened with that 1/8 turn it originally made. What happened was the plunger rotated and not the yoke. This was just enough to mess it up some and mash off the top part of the U shaped channel the pin in the anchor plate is supposed to ride in. I'm not sure if I need to replace the part or not, a new one cost about $30 and I don't have a good one to compare with. The pin looks like it will stay in the channel but I’m, not sure how critical this is. Anyway…… this is the picture is of the plunger where it attaches just inside the lift housing, you can see how it is mashed. The other end of the plunger is where the yoke behind the big spring attaches. Hey Mark, do have a picture of the plunger showing the depth of the U shaped channel?? Whats yall think? Replace it?

You are lucky you ever got that yoke off with penetrating oil alone. I most always have to use the red hot (acetylene torch) to get them to move.

The only purpose of the dowel and slot in the linkage is to hold the linkage which is inside the lift and to the left side of the rocker in a faily straight position. In my opinion if the dowel is in good condition then the slot is in good enough condition to do it's job of holding things relatively straight inside.

I have fixed lifts on 8Ns that have had the dowel completely gone for years and the lift contiued to work right.

These little tractors can tolerate a lot of abuse and still give good service. Why can't engineers do that anymore?????

Anybody know why my '87 Nisson Stanza doesn't want to go until I turn the ignition switch off and back on quickly??? Nobody around here does. Including me!

If it is like a VW the switch has to work the first time or you have to reset it back to off to be able to use it to start again. Might just be a safty thing for kids. Mark H.

Mine was in similar shape, so I went ahead and replaced it.
