When i brought my 8N you could not turn it off with the key so i installed a rear tail instead of a diode. the amp gauge showed the battery charging even if i have nothing on when i just turn the key on. also after the tractor is running the tail light stays lit. (using a tail light the same as side marker)

Alan..... ..... dang, ain't even got my coffee drunk yet.....Thats why they're called "idiot lites" (grin).

1st, your tailite is really trying to tell you something. 2nd, you've got you ammeter mis-wired.

Don't know whether you've got the OEM loop ammeter or a 2 termininal replacement ammeter. (remember, ammeter don't care 6 or 12 volts).

If you've got the OEM loop ammeter, disconnect the ammeter wire from your ballast resistor terminal block and pull the wire carefull back thru the loop. And stick the ammeter wire thru the loop from the other direction and re-connect it to the terminal block.

If you've got a 2-terminal replacement ammeter, just "swapp" the ammeter leads.

Now then your ammeter should read "discharge" (-) when you turn your ignition on.

3rd-ly, I'm assuming that even with the idiot lite litt, you are still capable of turning your engine "OFF".

My best guess based upon your description, you've got a bad alternator. I'd take it in to a shop for a checkout..... .....Dell
