Some time ago, I was told by by my brother who has a 52 8n that I should bushhog with the throttle wide open. I never tried that because it just didn't seem right, but maybe its really the thing to do since my governer on my 41 9n apparently isn't working right and I find myself constantly increasing and decreasing the throttle when I hit a high spot. I only bushhog twice a year and I hit some pretty high growth. I don't want to rebuild the governer but should I be bushhogging wide open?

I guess I've been trying to 'ween' my tractor. Generally speaking, I only give it about 1/4 throttle. Thanks for the info. I'll try next time at 3/4 to full throttle and see what happens. Maybe the governer works alright afterall....

I'm always in wide open...1st gear for thick hogging..of course I alter speed as needed in thin growth..or on a whim
Open fields with no chunks I will use 2n gear, eVn thought it is suppose to be a weak gear.Mechanically speaking.

When i use my Woods Finish mower for the same fields ___3rd gear when the field allows..though it bounces me around..{{{{{{{nothing like a solid suspension}}}}}}

My governor works pefectly.. no reason to baby these engines.. they were/are built to take it.

Second gear is only weak on the 8N which has a 4 speed transmission. We had this discussion and it was explained to me by the old timers (in experiance) on the Board that showed me were the weakness was.

Are you sure your govenor is not working? You can lean out jus a little when you hit the high stuff. You can see if the throttle opens up. In first gear I run about 3/4 throttle. Boggs some in really tall thick stuff.

Most pto run eqipment is designed to operate at 540 pto rpm. This is about 1550 to 1600 rpm on the N tractors at 3/4 throttle. Repair you're govenor. it's not that big of a job.
