I noticed that my raditor has gone down and that
it seems to be getting into the oil. How can I tell if this is a from a bad head gasket or cracked block? The tractor runs fine otherwise.

Fought with the same problem for about a year. Replaced the head gasket once, retightened head bolts twice, tore down engine expecting to find a cracked block. Couldn't find anything! Friendly mechanic checked the head and found it was warped about .008 inches. Ground the head flat, cured the problem. Been running about a year without any sign of water in the oil. When I tore it down there must have been over a gallon of water in the oil sump.

Thanks, I'm hoping it is the head gasket. I've got one on order, it'll be here Friday. Meanwhile the head comes off tommorrow and I'm going to take it to a machine shop and have it checked. I'll drain the oil tomorrow and see how much water is in it.

Hope that does the trick!

Pat..... do a compression test. Bad headgasket will generally be a low test. cracked block won't show anything. Then retorque your cylinderhead bolts in the approved manor to the required torque level. Then test the compression again.

Remember, head gaskets are cheep.

Get that headgasket leak fixed quick, otherwize you will may get a "hydraulic lock" with radiatior water in the cylinder under compression stroke....nasty....remove all sparkplugs and pump out the water and change both the gasket and the oil before things rust up..... ..Dell
