My manual calls out Tool numbers 8N-17045-A(right hand) and 8N-17046-A (left hand) for adjusting the valves. They refer to them as "tappet holding wrenches".
Where can these be purchased or is the another trick to adjusting the valves without using these particular tools?

Many of the 8n blocks have been drilled to make valve adjustment a breeze. If yours has not, drill a 5/32 diameter hole about 3/4 in. below the top of the lifter hole (drill straight into the lifter hole) and perpendicular to the side of the block. Then stick a 5/32 punch through the newly drilled hole and into the open side of the lifter. This will hold the lifter from turning in either direction while making adjustments. You will have to drill a hole for each lifter, that is a total of 8 holes, but you will neve have to buy the Ford tool for adjusting your valves and it is much easier, you dont have to worry about getting the tool in the right place or bending or breaking it.

Thanks to ALL !!!!
Out here in AZ I thought I would really have a hard time with parts and advice. But, this message board is FANTASTIC and so is everyone who provides advice.

Thanks again, It's good to know you are out there.

This old 8N is the best piece of equip I've ever bought. I purchased it with an Auger, blade and bucket and recently purchased a Paulson FE Loader.
We are building our retirement cabin up in the hills and I've done more work with the 8N than I can believe. Really saved my poor ole back.

The New Holland (Ford) part# is APN17000A for a right and a left in a kit, you need to put a rod through the oil holes in the tappet and loosen the bolts first or the wrenches will break.

I got mine from Just 8N's, and they worked great. I don't think I could have made the adjustments without them. I would suggest you make sure the bolt in the tappet is not too tight and can be adjusted as thise tools are not the sturdiest and can easily break if your not careful.

I bought a pair off E bay and low and behold they came in a new Ford New Holland plastic bag. I would give FNH a call first.
