I have my Jubilee sheet metal off and decided to check the steering gear fluid....I removed the filler plug and put a little dipstick down to check the level....I did not get any indication of any fluid in the box....I figured it just wouldn't go dry without a problem so I decided to filler up and see what happens....Sure enough overnight both steering gear arms were leaking...My question is .....can I just remove the arms and replace the seals and the packing or is it more complicated then that....Also....Could some damage have been done running it almost dry...I did not seem to have any steering problems before....As always any opinions greatly appreciated....Alan

That's pretty standard. Pack it with grease

Alan- I found the same condtion to be true with my Jubilee. I replaced the seals etc, and filled with the recommended oil and all has been well. I did however do a complete tear down and replaced the top bearing.

Some recommend using grease instead of oil and that's what I did on my 8N. Used corn head grease in it and think it is a better way to go. Think it gives better lubrication to the top bearing and is thick enough not to want to run out.

I have the same problem with oil leaking from the steering box. Could you please explain what "Corn head grease" is?

Bob-
Corn head grease is used in corn harvesters / combines. It is a softer or thinner grease than regular grease and seems to work well in cold weather. I believe it can be bought at any of the larger tractor dealers. I got mine at the local John Deere dealer.
