Spindle bushing question

I have new spindle bushings to install in my 2N this weekend. Last week I tried to remove what I thought was the old bushing in one of the axles (item 19 and 23 of figure 163 in the FO4 manual), but it would not budge when I tried to drive it down into the axle. I knicked it, though, and I noticed that it is not brass. After further cleaning to remove the old grease and grime, I came to the conclusion that there is no bushing in there. The top of the inside of the axle has a machined lip, and I was confusing that for a bushing, I think. Here is the problem. The bushings I got fit nicely over the spindle, but they do not fit inside the axle. I’ve read in the archives about possibly having to ream the bushing, but do they sometimes need to be turned? I notice that these are marked “STD”. Do they sell undersized bushings (with the correct ID)? If the shiny thing I think is a machined lip is really a bushing, do I have to hit it REAL HARD to get it to move? While it is clear that my bushing will not fit inside the whole in the axle as it is now, it also appears that if I do remove the existing bushing (assuming that there really is a bushing in there), the hole that remains will be too big. Any ideas?

Ron, Just wanted to confirm what Wayne has told you, is no doubt the correct answer. It seems a little confusing. I went through the same problem and received the same answer as Wayne has given, so I am sort of speaking from experience. Cheers, Murray

The old bushings are likely still in there. They are hard to get out. I ground a special rod with a square end to drive against what was left of the bushing. I guess you could saw a slot in it with a sawzall to speed it up. I have heard of folks driving the bushings inward where they just expand and stay there when you put the new ones in. The middle has a larger dia to accomodate this. I don't like that idea though. I prefer to drive them out from the opposite side. The usual problem is that they are so worn there is little to drive against. I am sure your std bushings will fit and should not require honing.

Love to see a picture of that driver you fabricated. Those bushings are tough to get out.

There is nothing fancy about the tool. I just ground a long steel rod about .5 dia to have a perfectly square end with sharp corners all the way around. Then I just used it to get a hold of the bushing to drive it out the opposite end. It would help if you could somehow split the bushing I guess or put heat on the housing.
