8N transmission problems

I recently bought a '52 8N to replace my well worn '40 9N. It seems to be in better than average shape except that there is no second gear in the four speed trans. I removed the top, drained all the fluid and found myself looking at a trans that appears to be in great shape; very little wear to the gear surfaces, shifter and shift rails show no wear to the "squared off" edges and slots, no metel in the bottom of the trans, etc. It shifts into second without any problem, it's just that noting happens!
In reading through this BB I get the drift that second gear is the weak spot on 8Ns. Can anyone tell me what it is that is broken(visually there is nothing that appears broke or otherwise out of place)? More importantly, How do I fix it?!

I want to use a brush hog with this tractor to keep about one acre clean. Can I use one with first gear only in the event it is not feasable for me to overhall the trans? Is a 48' hog better than a 60"? One last question that I hope doesn't sound too stupid. The three speed in my 9N works fine. Can I interchange them? It really doesn't matter to me whether or not I have a 4 or 3 speed as this tractor is used for landscaping and cleaning my home lot. No farming activity.

Thanks for any information that anyone can provide. By the way, I have an early '40 9N for sale.

Thanks for the replies and the info. It looks like I'll be able to use a brush hog in 1st gear. All I have to mow is weeds that get no more than a 2 or 3 feet in height on flat ground. No trees or thick bushes, gullys or ditches! I'm not in a hurry anyway! I've heard some people say that a 5 footer is too much for the pto speed in 1st. Any comments??? I'd prefer a 5 ft( I guess i am a little bit of a hurry) but could get by with a 4 ft. It doesn't look like I'm going to tear the trans apart for a while, although I plan to do that as the tractor is too nice to allow to simply go down the tubes due to lack of maintainence/repair work.

You could probably swap the complete tranny in the block and rear end are the same, but it will require swapping other stuff such as steering pedestal, clutch linkage etc. Probably cheaper and easier to dive into your 4 spd and repair what's broke. I don't know what the problem is either sorry.

Richard..... ....the 8N's 2nd gear was the designated "plowing gear" per Ford manual. I personally can't think of any tractor chore thats gonna take more power than plowing. This doesn't mean that 2nd gear is bulletproof as many brushogg abused 2nd gear breakdowns will attest to. The problem with brushoggin in 2nd is accidently hittin' stuff and NO ORC. The Over Running Coupler is a necessity when brushoggin. $60 cheap. Don't mucka round with 4' brushogg, get a 5'er and an ORC..... ....Dell,

who sometimes brushoggs in 1st and under, and 3rd and under, but mostly in 2nd and under (thats tractor talk for the dealer installed 3-speed Sherman aux tranny)

P.S. Don't really know why your 8N's 2nd gear doesn't work BUT I do know you can't swap 9N gears into an 8N gearbox.
