Hi Guys,

To those of you who discussed my engine problem last week, I thought I'd give you an update.

Decided to take your advice and do as much as I can myself. So I pulled the tractor home yesterday and unloaded it in the garage. (Should have seen the strange stares as I rolled into the neighborhood!)

Took the front end apart today. When I pulled the head off, I was happy to find all four pistons still move with the crank. # 2 cylinder had a lot of little pieces of metal in it and on closer inspection I noticed the piston seemed to have WAY too much clearance, about an eighth of an inch all the way around between piston and cylinder. The cylinder wal is scored pretty good all the way around too.

I think what happened is the part of the piston that forms the top of the groove above the first ring broke off all the way around. Probably as it ran little pieces of metal bouncing around in there got compressed between the piston and head.

So now I have it jacked up and the bare engine is sticking out in space. I'm going to borrow a small trailer and back it underneath the engine, and lower the tractor down until the engine is resting on the trailer, secure it, unbolt it, and haul the engine to the shop for overhaul.

This will give me the time to really clean the old girl off and get some fresh paint on her too.

I'll try to send pictures as I go if I can figure out how to do that. Can anybody give me a 'sending pictures for dummies' course? I have a digital camera, just don't know how to upload to this board.

Oh Boy..... .....set your engine down in an old rubber tire, so it don't bounce or roll around.

A possibility, you wore thru your #2 cylinder sleeve and thats why you see about 1/8 inch gap around piston.

I definately encourage you to seriously consider the merits of re-sleeving ALL your cylinders. And obviously, your #2 piston. Your machine shop should know how to do that. All these problems become evident upon dis-assembly..... ..Dell

Thanks,

I think new pistons, sleeves, bearings, valve job, etc. all the way around are in order, no sense only doing half the job at this point.
