Bob..... ....if'n ya been thru 3 batteries since spring, what makes you so certain your starting problem is the starter motor INSTEAD OF the generator?..... ...Dell

Ole Bob, I would make sure that the Bat Ground Cable is connected to "Bare" Metal Contact with the Frame. The Bolt itself is not a good conductor..

If the starter is the problem it should have the same problem when directly Jumpered.. Tractor out of Gear (should never be left in gear) and jumper cables, one to Frame and touch the other to the Starter side of the selenoid (starter post)... Starter should crank (note:do not push Starter Button) If ignition key is "on" Tractor should Start (can jumper with 12V this Way).

Hope This Helps

He also might check both his ignition and starter switches for bad contacts, or corrosion based shorts ( to ground, or contact to contact ).

Jumper wire with aligator clips are good for this sort of thig.

"that sickening buzz from the solenoid" This is the normal indication (sound) that the starter is not getting sufficient voltage to operate properly. (Dead Battery) I agree with Dell. Check your charging system for proper operation and repair as needed.
