I was having trouble starting my 49' 8N, all I got was a click from the starter relay with each push of the start button. Just to FYI anyone who might be having trouble starting there tractor, the solution for me was to put on a #2 gauge neg. battery cable,(it had #4) and cleaning and tightenig all the connections. I belive the#2 is the recommended size for the battery cable but am not positive, but it solved my issue with starting. Just a post for general info. Rick T.

Hi Rick,

Your message caught my attention because I believe I'm having the same problem.

Our old 8N 195x Ford Tractor will run a long time.
But once you turn it off, it will not start. It just makes a clicking noise. Is that what yours was doing?

I think we will try what you did and see if it helps. Any other recommendation?

Any help would be very apreciated.

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary, My 8N only seemed to click when attempting to initialy start. After changing the cable it started fine. I hope the solution for you is as simple.

Well, when my '48 8N (12v) started clicking, it was none of the above. My starter bendix gear was stuck to the flywheel. I had to remove the starter and free the gear before I could get it to spin.

The sad thing is I thought the battery was down so I put the jumper cables on it. Low and behold I melted the wax out the 6v coil by putting to much juice through the voltage primary.

Had to replace the coil & fix the starter to get it going!!

yea, when my 2N clicks, I try tightening the cables.

and for added excitement, I put a 00 gauge cable on my 6 volt 2N (thanks dennis carpenter)

that really spins the engine
