I noticed the generator on my N when I gave it a good cleaning is upside down, if you want the oil cap to be on top. If I rotate the generator where the oil cap is at 12 oclock, the two terminals will be on the engine side instead of the outside. Does it matter?

Rod..... ....Guess what? electrons don't care rightside-up or up-sidedown. Generally speaking you want all your generator parts eazy to get to. The person that last worked on that particular generator put the endcap on 180 deg outta position.

You should be able to very easily remove the generator hold'em together long screws and gently rotate the generator endplate 180 deg and get everything lined up WITHOUT REMOVEING the endplate OFF the armature and having to mucka round with the brushes springing outta their holders..... .....Dell

May have been put on the opposite side forsome reason. Belt alignment, different gen., or ?. Some gen. went on the left, some went on the right. My 51 is on the left, my 48 goes on the right. The distributor dictates the 8N gen setup. I suppose all 9N's are on the right. HTH
