There are three post on my 6V generator, one on the back, two on the side. One lines up with the post on the back the other is off set. There are no letters. Which is the field post?

Exactly what del said. The post with a fibre washer as an insulator is the field. The other post on the housing, if you look close, is mounted right to the housing.. again.. this is grnd.

Rod..... ....the large end post is the generator output called the ARMATURE. Then closely examine the 2 posts on the roundpart of the generator. One will have a lotta insulating washers and extra nuts, thats the FIELD post. The other plain post is the GROUND post..... ..Dell

On mine (a '53 NAA Jubilee) the one pointing down (when the generator
is mounted) is the Ground and the one pointing away from the engine is
the Field. The Armature, you guessed, is the one on the rear.
