Interested in acquiring one for my Jubilee. Can anyone recommend the right set up? Also a range in price for used, if I can find one.

I use a Ford 515 on my 8N. No pitman arm to break, runs good, parts available from New Holland. Cost me $400 at an implement auction.

How do you get oscillating motion without having some kind of "pitman" arm?!?

Just curious.

Or are you really saying that the hinge of the cutter bar and the excentric drive shaft for the Pitman arm rotate on the same axis? That would be like the old side mount mowers.

Regards,
Larry

The later Ford sickle mowers use a "wobble box" that allows the blade to move back and forth. The box is run by a belt that is driven by the PTO. I have one but use it very rarely. Get more service from the bushhog and the finish mower.

Larry, it's the latter. On the 515, the hinge for the cutting bar and the drive pulley are on the same axis. A short pitman connects the drive pulley to the knife.

Hi Larry, Its done with a V belt and either a gear or pin on the driven pulley.

I use a John Deere #9 on my Ford 850. John Deere made a number of different sickle mowers. The #9 and the similar #9W are fully mounted 3 pt mowers with no tail wheel. I like mine. Works well. And it was free. There was one like it for sale near me, but the asking price was $600. I think $150-$300 is closer to the mark. I've seen #9 mowers sell on ebay for about $150, but I'd hate to pay shipping on that!

You can use any three-point-hitch category I sickle-bar: Ford, John Deere, International. The Ford 3ph(501 model?)have been selling around here for $150-300.

bg,

Local New Holland dealer (Jasper, GA) says that he has a John Deere in "good condition that will work on my 48 8N" for $550.00. I am going by in a day or two and take a look at it. If it is in "good condition", does that price sound about right?

Thanks,

Dave.

sounds a little high to me, but that may be OK in your area. Sickle-bar mowers aren't used too much any more. Make him an offer of $350 and see what happens.
