Am I missing something??? 8n brakes

I just replaced my brake shoes with new ones. The old ones were soak with oil. The axle seals have been replaced and everything is dry now. Should it now lock the wheel in a turn?

I don't have much better brakes than before. I adjusted everything per the manual. Cleaned and dried everything including the drums. What should I check?

I was hoping to be able to turn on a dime now.

TIA

Ron

My Ferguson TO-30 would lock up the brakes and turn on a quarter when you would step on one side. Your 8N brakes should do the same thing. I have to get used to my Massey 135 disk brakes they lock the tires up with just a little presure on the pedal. They stop better then my truck dose!! Mark H.

The most likely thing is that your lined shoes were ground to a diameter different from your drum or your drum has been turned so much before it is oversized. The lining will likely wear in. Adjusting them up tighter will help the wear in process and likely give you better braking as well. Ford brakes were never real world beaters, I think Henry felt tractors did not need brakes anyway, like the Fordsons!

I can lock either wheel and spin on that dime.
Every tractor I had (9N,2N,8N) will lick the wheel if I really stomp on it.

Ron,
"Cleaned and dried everything including the drums. "
What did you use to clean your brake drums?
Best to use a regular brake cleaner solvent, such as Brakekleen.
After cleaning, I use fine grit sandpaper or emory cloth to cut the glaze off the surface of the drums.
And yes, if brakes are working properly, you should be able to slide the tires. Anti-lock brakes were never a factory or dealer option when these tractors were built.(grin)
Also what Scott said can play a part in not getting full stopping potential of brakes.

I cleaned everything using a generic brake cleaner. I put the drums on a lathe and ever so slightly turned them. They were rather true which suprised me.

Thanks

I experienced the same thing. The brakes did improve with time, but I sold the tractor before I put much time on it. Give it some time.

The lining may have to wear to match the drum, I like to round the sides off of the lining before installing, it should not lock up the wheels but should stop quick.

When I did mine back last year, mine would spin in the same tracks going either direction.

With time, mine got to where the right one won't but the left still works fine. I think I have a little slack in something in that right one now. The end of the activation rod has excess movement in it?
