I converted my 47 8N to a 12 volt system. The fan belt is wider than the 6 volt belt, and I have noticed that the belt flexes under a load, and breaks the #2 port on the distributor. I have tighten the belt and also left it as the instructions say with about 1/2" of play. But it continues to break the #2 port. I was just wondering if anyone had experinced this problem, and if there was as solution?

Thanks, Ron

What about playing with the postion of the alternator so that the belt coming off of the bottom pulley isn't coming up on such a steep angle? That might mean having the alternator mounted a little further out. I dunna know.

About 1/2 of my #2 post has been gone for 6 years. I just make sure that the boot is still in good shape and that the wire is making good contact with the post. I've had no problems.

Hi Ron. All the other guys are right. My 49 8N has broken off the #2 distributor cap tab for years. Once it is broken off it really doesn’t hurt anything. It may drowned out easier in the rain. I replaced my kingpin bushing about two years ago but I still used the broken cap. It runs like a top. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

Sounds like the old worn king pin & or bushing problem. I'd check it out...DaBrow

Ron,

You say that the fan belt is wider than the 6 volt belt, that makes no sense to me. The original 6v belt is a "B" series belt or 5/8" wide. A standard automotive belt is an "A" series belt or 1/2" wide. The "A" series belt will fit all the way down to the bottom of the pulley groove, where as the "B" series belt will just about fill up the entire groove.

Are you putting on a new cap and then taking it for a test drive over uneven ground? If so, I vote for the front axel bushing being a bit loose.

Ron..... .what ED and Dave said..... ..and.....
Your N-Fanbelt should be 5/8" wide. If your 6 volt belt was narrower than 5/8" it would be bottem running on the crankshaft and waterpump pully. Not good. Remember, fanbelts transmitt power by their tapered sides.

Sometimes you can widen out your front axle 1 or 2 boltholes (each side) and that will reduce the angle of rotation enough that the front axle will stop hitting the #2 frontmount sparkie nipple. Bottom line, you really should replace your frontaxle kingpin..... ...Dell

If I recall, and you may want to do an archive search on this, the front axle having too much play can cause breaking of the distributor cap around plug wire 2.

You might want to jack up the front of the tractor by the oil pan and see if you can rotate the axle to where it would strike the distributor. If it does, check the radius arms for too much play and check the axle king pin for wear.

If as ED said the front axel is the problem it is common with the front mount distributor. It is located in the center just below the distributor. It consists of a bushing and pin. Check if you have to buy the set for a good fit of the bushing.
Some resently sold bushings have had a sloppy fit.
Probably made overseas. Check with the dealers on this Board.

Thanks Guys, I didn't think about the front axle hitting the distributor cap, I just figured it was the fan belt doing it, because it is so close.

I will check the kingpin. This winter I already had several maintenance task planned; replacing the brakes, changing the tranny oil, replacing the rear axle seals, and just generally cleaning and fixing the ol girl.
