That is a step up tranny. The step down tranny has the same shifter lever as the step up-step down tranny. It is also painted a dull gold color if it has original paint.I am talking about the Sherman tranny. don

Don; When did Ford use a straite cut gear on the input shaft on the Transmission? Mark H.

I think all 9ns had the straight cut gear on the input shaft 9n7017A.They changed on the 2n and maybe on the late 9ns,not sure.I think I know why you are asking.....Sherman over drive trannys? don

Don; People have asked befor about that gear. In the book it shows a Helical cut gear for 1939 to 52 input shaft??? Is the book wrong? Useing Shermans in the older and newer tractors is why I am asking. Mark H.

Well, if you are looking in the MPC 39-53,yes that is sorta mis-leading.My 41 parts book shows the straight gear. When looking at the "52" version of the 39-53 MPC,one needs to remember that when they give "year" dates, all that means is, that part "can" be used on those years of tractors, not necessarlly what was the original part.Having said this,COMMON SENSE TELLS ONE THAT YOU CAN'T MIX STRAIGHT AND HELICAL GEARS as you know. This also applies to a lot of other parts in the MPC. don

Also, correct me if I am wrong. But you had better know if you have a heilcal or straight, shaft drive in your tractor. It is not universal, as a change was made. I beleive, in the early 50's ?

Dave; I have yet to see a straite cut gear in the input shaft. I have heard about them on this site and have taken them apart back to 9N 1942, I know they have straite cut gears in the 9Ns and 2Ns in the transmission. The book says the helical gear was used from 39 to 52 on the Ns and there might have been a 39 9N that used it but I would like to see a picture of the straite cut input shaft if some one has one. Thanks, Mark H.

Yes they would and the step down is worth more and the step up is worth 1/3 of that price. They will be bummed when they put it in and find out. I sold a step up once but it turned out to be a step down and the guy was upset but I was too because it sold for a lot less then it was worth! Mark
