I have a 1949 Ford 8N that the left wheel turns before the right wheel.I have read the IT manual but don't completely understand what it is saying. The right wheel kind of moves back and forth,as in left to right,as the tractor is moving over rough ground also. Can anyone help please? It is the older style steering box. THANKS!!!

If you can detect a lot of loose motion where the steering pitman shaft leaves the steering box that may be where the problem lies. Their are bushings inside the bearing housing at this point and if they get loose so do the mesh of the gears inside.

If their is not too much wear in the bushings it is possible to take up some of the slack by taking out the four bolts that hold the beaing housing (pitman shaft) to the steering box. The center of this housing is off center. When the whole housing is turned to the next hole or ever how many holes it takes to remove the slack it may be possible to take the slack out. If the houshing just goes all the way around and does not get to a tight place then you are past help untill the bushings are replaced. Retighten and try it in each hole until the best place is found.Only a couple of bolts need to be used while hunting the best spot. Even if you can't take all the slack out you may be able to help by taking it to the place where it is the tightest.

Mine had the same problem, I ended up replacing the steering box. I went with another steering box because I have a front end loader on mine and thought having an extra would be nice.
