I replaced the brakes on my 52 8n several days ago along with new springs. Cleaned and dried everything and ended up with no better brakes. Everyone said let em wear some. Well, I did and no better brakes on the left and too much on the right.

Lets start on the right. I adjusted everything per the manual and after about 10 hours of hogging the brakes started grabbing so I ended up loosening them several times till you could loosen them no more and they are still grabbing to the point that the drum gets so hot you get burned.

The left has great brakes in reverse but nothing going forward.

What gives? All 4 shoes appear to be the same with the exception of a rounded edge on 2 of the shoes (which ended up on the left side). Is there a top and bottom shoe? I used one box of shoes for one side and one for the other side.

Help please. TIA ands sorry for the long post.

Ron

Hi Ron. The following will give you a look at a properly assembled left side brake assembly:

Ron,

If I remember correctly the left brake has three springs, and the right has two springs. If you have the manual you can look up that detail and make sure you have it correct.

There is usually a long lining shoe and a short lining shoe. The long shoe always goes on the following position as to the direction of rotation. If you have the left shoes on wrong they will have more braking power going backwards.

You could have more oil on the brakes already if you didn't stop the leaks.

Never have more oil in the reservoir than the dip stick says is full. Better actually to have it a half inch low than a half inch high.If it has too much oil in the reservoir the axle seals will leak no matter how good a job you do on the seals. The seals must be above the oil level.

The right brake will always have a little more braking power than the left simply because the linkage is much shorter and less friction on the linkage to the right brake. Nothing on the right to stretch.

Zane, Thanks for the quick response. I have the back end up on stands and the drums off. There is no oil on the linings. Everything looks new, like when I put it back together. I will check the linings and see if there is a differnce in length. Any idea why the right is dragging so much?

Thanks again,
Ron
