'41 Flywheel Ring Gear

Ordered a new Flywheel Ring Gear for my '41 9N. After heating the ring gear to 450 degrees (and even freezing the flywheel) I still can't get the ring over the flywheel. There is a 0.080" difference in the inside measurement of the ring to the outside measurement of the flywheel. Any suggestions?

The expansion rate for the ring is roughly 0.000006" per degree farenheit per inch of diameter. Doing a little math should tell you what temp you need to achieve for installation. I would double check your readings however because the value you have expressed is eighty thousandths. I haven't looked in the machinist's handbook for allowable interference for this diameter but at first glance it seems like a whole lot. Whatever you end up doing DO NOT water quench the assembly after installation. Slow cooling will allow the material to relieve some of the stresses that will reside in the gear from being essentially stretched. Cooling too quickly could crack the ring at the root of the gear tooth.

400 degrees won't do it. I heated mine with a rosebud tip on my accetylene torch just until it turned blue and it slipped right on. Good luck

I had the same experience as Jay. I was afraid i would damage the gear with all the pounding I was doing ! Wound up going to NAPA and having them press it on for twenty bucks, then to a local welder to put 4 spot welds on it to keep it from slipping, another $5. My $.02

Had a machine shop do mine.Removed the old one with drill and cold chisel.Test fit cold and it droped on the flywheel,didn't have to heat it at all.Ended up putting four weld's about 2" in length.They said the ring gear was about .010ths to big. Jay 2NSC

Rick..... ....most people don't heat the starter ring gear enuff. Heat it all over, but don't make it glow red. Probably closer to 800F. There are some "temp chalks" you can get at a good welding supply if you're really worried. Then do it fast, big hammer sometimes helps if you're too slow. Its suppost to be an "interference or shrink fit"..... ...Dell
