I have enough brake now to lock either wheel even going straight. The brakes are adjusted loose. There is almost enough pedal to go to the floor board (both pedals). My concern is the brake drums. They are getting hot (to hot to touch) even when I am running around in 2nd cutting the grass. I almost never use the brakes while cutting grass.

Has anyone ever checked there drums after running around the field for 10 to 15 minutes? Are they to hot to hold a finger too?

Thanks for any advice, I don't want to bust a drum from the heat.

Ron

I would pull a shoe and match it to the drum to see if the arc is the same. If not you may have to grind them as Zane said. The other comments are right also. One question though, did you replace the seals with the originals or with "Sure Seals"?

Have you checked to see it the backing plate is rubbing? Also when you did the seals, how worn are the hubs? If the hub is pulled to far in toward the backing plate the out side of the shoes will rub on the drum.

It is possible that the linings on the replacement brakes were too thick. If this is the case they will never quit getting hot until the lining wears down.

I used to work at a parts store back when there was no such thing as disc brakes and we had a machine that arched repacement brakes to the diameter of the drum that had been turned down so that the shoe would make good contact all the way from one end to the other instead of just in the middle of the shoe. This machine was also used to assure that the lining was not too thick. If it was it could be ground off to the right thickness.

This was the days of all brakes having asbestos in them and when the grinding was done the asbestos was flying all over the place and into the air like a fog. Ignorance is bliss!

So far it has not come to haunt me and I'm 67. I think I have a guardian angle looking after me!

I sounds like they are not installed properly or have broken parts inside. Have you pulled the drums?

Dennis,
I just put all new hardware and shoes on. Everything is new clean and dry. I have pulled the drums several times and can't figure out why they are getting so hot.

Thanx
Ron

does the brake lever return all the way? tried pulling it up...any play? is it returning fully? Shoes are installed in the correct position? What gets me you say the petal goes almost all the way down then locks....still thinkin here.....
Another question...was this happening before you made changes? buy it that way? or just started after a brake job?

Just trying to help..

It started after new brakes. Prior it had oil soaked shoes on it. Replaced the seals along with new shoes and springs. The pedals are returning to the proper position.

I am going to pull everything AGAIN and check the roundness of the drums.

As for installed correctly, all the shoes were the exact same and everything looks like the picture in the I&T manual. Also, 3 springs on the left 2 on the right.
