I know of several folks who use their 8ns to pull Three Gang Mowers (Toro,Jacobsen orWorthington)with no problems. I have come accross a Five Gang Jacobsen for sale at a reasonable price, but I question the hp needed to drag them. Can a good running 8n handle it?

I have a 5 gang set Toro and 8Ns have no problem at all. I mostly use them in a set of 3 though to make it around some of the corners and in between some obstacles. The mowers work great and the 100# rollers on each mower have really smoothed out a lot of lawn for me. I keep up about 6 acres and the gangs are great. There is a bit of work to sharpening them and it's true that they don't do much good in wet and tall stuff. Overall I am really happy with mine and very happy with the cut they provide...very even and very smooth.

If you can get them for a good price then do it...but don't think these are not an interchanable substitute for a finish mower, they aren't.

Horsepower wasn't the problem with my Noname 5 gang. My 8N had no problem pulling it. Gang mowers have other limitations I'm sure you are aware of. Maintenance. They need to be sharpened regularly. I finally learned to do a fair job, but it took some practice. Timing. You must cut the grass before it gets too tall. If you get a long wet spell, you're SOL. Space. Too many trees, shrubs, critters or other impediments made it just not worth my time. It did a nice job, but was demanding. I spent more time maintaining and trimming with the gang than I do mowing with a 6 food rotary finish mower. That's how I see it. Steve 8N 169302
