Hi Everyone:

I appreciate your help regarding my 2n and its broken pto/ transmission to final drive broken coupler. Here is the question. I just put in the pto shifter which was broken and it does not engage the pto clutch. Is there suppose to a linkage arm that comes off the pto clutch or is there suppose to be an additional linkage mechanism from the pto shifter lever to the pto clutch? I have searched the archives regarding this as well as looked for the diagram/section in the FO 4 and cannot find anything. Willy N? Dell? Anyone?

Thanks - It is snowing up here today.

Rich,

I broke a 2N coupler recently too so I am interested in how this turns out. I am wondering however if somehow the sliding selector shaft coming from the PTO on the back of the trans. is bent or if somehow it was forced too far inward when the coupler broke. Don't know what you were doing at the time but I was pulling a stump and when it let go it wedged between the hydraulic pump and the end of the pinion. Broke the pinion clean off. Point here is that there's lots of stuff that the coupler could damage when it lets go.

I am interested in what you find out, I'll be reassembling mine today.

Rich,
No there isn't really any linkage, there is the arm/fork on the inside of the cover and it fits into the rail that engages and disengages your PTO. Its really a pretty simple setup.

I thought it should be that simple also however, my friend who is a certified mechanic can not get the PTO lever to be engaged into the pto clutch mechanism. He said it is so far apart it seems that there should be a linkage that connects the inner arm of the pto shift lever and the pto clutch. I will be looking at the innards of the thing tomorrow. thanks Levi and any other thoughts on the subject are appreciated.

He might be bolting the plate on wrong and the arm is pointing the wrong way? It can only spin around so far befor it hits the stop sticking out the side of it. Mark H.

I wonder what he's looking at. If your FO-4 is the same vintage as mine then check page 86 fig. fo129, in it you will see the shift rail, the fork simply goes into the space on the end of the rail and moves it back and forth.
there is another picture in the parts section that show the fork #7 right above the shift rail #8.....Good luck & let us know how you come out on it....
