I'm putting my 9n back together and bought adjustable tappets. My question is, what keeps the adjuster bolt from turning after you set the valve lash without a lock nut?????

Thanks, Al

The adjuster on the tappet is very tight and will not turn on its own, when ajusting them it takes a good amount of force to turn them. You will need the tool to to adjust them.

Thanks, that was going to be my next question about them being hard to turn. I just got the wrenches so I should have her back together and running this weekend.

Thanks again, Al

Hi Al. I wondered the same thing when I rebuilt my 8N a couple of years ago. In fact, one older tractor mechanic, who had been around a while (from the old school), told me the adjustable tappets would not stay adjusted. He suggested I use the old style non-adjustable type. I asked that same question on this board and got advice that the adjustable tappets would stay adjusted. I have been using my 8N with the adjustable tappets for about two years and the engine is extremely quiet and I have not had to re-adjust the tappets. And, besides, if I did need to adjust them it would be easy and would not require dissembling the engine and valve train like the non-adjustable tappet adjustment would require. HTH Rick H. Ga.
