OK folks- I need your feedback on this. The wife and I are about to adopt our second baby. This means that some of my mechanical family must go.
This family consists of a 3600 Ford, a 1510 Ford
with 4wd and loader, a Farmall H and my beloved
2N. Two must go. I bought the first two Fords new
and the 2n is nicely refurbished. My practical side advises me to keep the first two Fords and sell the oldies. However my less practical side wants to keep them. My last "decision" was to keep
the 1510 and 2N. When I think about getting rid
of the 3600 I think how much of a struggle it was
to get it paid for and how loyal a friend it has been. I have 100 acres- mostly wooded. I use a tractor
mostly to mow and retreive firewood. Admittedly, I
do not need four tractors, or even two, but I'm
very attached to all of these tractors, even the Farmall. Thanks

money is short term problem and selling good stuff becomes a long term memory and i would think that you should only sell the most impractical tractors but only as a last resort if all else fails. you can always get another h or n too. n arent worth a lot and the h the same so how far ahead are you if you sell them but if you work a woodlot you need a good puller and i dont know of any of the new ones have power steering and 4 wheel drive but you cant go wrong with it. anyhow flesh and blood has far more meaning than old and cold steel.

Hmmm...lets see- the tractors can do work, and earn their keep....and rerely nag or yell at you.

Well....I won't give you my opinion on this....but keep in mind that I have 2 tractors, and no wife or kids. (and all this peace and tranquility doesn't cost me a dime!)

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I think i will try
to hold on to all of them until I absolutly have to sell. As far as the cost of adoption goes that is just a fact of life. As a matter of fact the gov't does help. There is a $10,000 tax credit for
adoption, but it does not kick in until a year after the adoption is finalized.

You and your wife are great folks I can see that right away. What gets me is the high cost of adoption. There are so many kids out there that need a good home and folks like yourselves trying there best to give it. I have no idea what is involved in the process at all but it just seems to me that it should not be so expensive. Take care, your rewards will be great...

The way I see it you could get some pretty good money now out of the newer tractors but not a lot out of the older ones. Down the road however, the older tractors may be worth a lot more in the long run.

If you have any good friends or neighbors around that would be interested in a tractor, you might try to keep it in the neighborhood. It would be sort of like giving away a puppy to a good home with me.

Why on Earth does adopting a child have anything to do with keeping 4 tractors?

You have totally lost me here, unless it is just a 'mandate' from the wife...and then I still don't get it...

Salmoneye,
Respectively, it has to do with money. This second
adoption will be around 26k. Selling tractors would not totally pay for it all but it would make a dent.

Hey, For 26K dollars you can adopt me and I already have my own tractors. Im with Brad on this. There is no way it should cost so much to adopt (And it is great of you to do it). The govt should assist with it. Not only are you doing a good thing but you are removing a potential expense to other tax payers.

Gotcha now...

I forget that these old hunks of iron actually have value.
Put that way, there is no choice.

I apologize...

The way that I read it you and your wife have 2 adopted children. That equals 4 people in the household. In a very few short years you will have one tractor per person-a reasonable ratio.

I would have to vote to keep all of them. If you do get rid of one or two you will always regret it...

But after considering it there are priorities and in this case clearly the children are the priority. By the way-I applaud and admire you for reaching out and adopting children.

You need to assess which tractor(s) will server you best. Keeping in mind that you have 100 acres so in this case bigger may be better. It sounds like the 1510 and the 3600 would be the most logical choices to keep.

I'm just glad I don't have to make that decision...

Mike,
I like the way you think! Yes, we do (will) have two adopted children. Number two will be here in Feb. I can see it now- all of us with our own tractor!
