Overheating

I am having a problem with overheating while under heavy workload on my '50 8n. Problem occurs when bush hogging for about half and hour. I bought the tractor about 6 weeks ago and have not really gotten into the rebuild process yet. Could be as simple as a bad radiator?

I have blown out the fins with air to remove dirt (A LOT), have about a 70% glycol/water mix in it and am running in about 40 degrees outdoor temps here in Wisconsin. The coolant is running through the radiator as best i can see but it is clearly boiling at overheating. Tractor runs fine other than a slight miss at low idle once in awhile.

Where do I begin to try to figure out the cause? Reading other posts it seems like there are a lot of causes to the problem....I just don't know where to start.

Rick

Also remember to flush and back-flush the block when you take the hoses off.

Rick, Your radiator is probably plugged up. 50 years of crud and gook on the inside. Try disconnecting the bottom radiator hose and running a garden hose full open in the radiator neck (with engine off). If water ain't comming out about as fast as it is going in you will need to get your radiator rodded out at the local radiator shop. Good luck, Allen (;^)

okay, I removed the bottom hose and flushed the radiator from the cap with a garden hose....it was coming out the bottom as fast as it was going in. The fan belt is tight and running well. I did not take the top hose off or check the thermostat. Would the thermostat be the problem if the coolant was truly boiling over? I would think that if the stat was bad it would blow through at a lower temp.....this stuff was really hot when it ran over.
