DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THE REMANUFACTURED NIPPONDENSO GEAR REDUCTION STARTER FOR THE 8N? IF YOU DO HAVE EXPERIENCE, PLEASE PASS ON YOUR THOUGHTS, GOOD AND BAD. THANK YOU. PHILIP.

I am familiar with the starter, but not as an 8n application. It is an excellent starter, first used on Honda and Toyota cars. Later it found its way onto Dodge Caravans and God knows how many others. Its positive attributes are its light weight and compact size, not normally a sought after quality in tractor parts. For this reason I have seen many adapted for use in formula racing cars. Its only achillies heel is that when the contacts in the solenoid wear out, a lot of lazy/unscrupulous mechanics have installed complete assemblies instead of replacing a $3 set of contacts, giving it a bad rap as expensive to repair. The parts are readily available if we can just get past our throw away mentality. In over 10 years as a mechanic, I never once saw an actual motor failure. Just like the much vilified Delco alternator, it is a good candidate for any application due to its wide acceptance and awesome reliability. Once you had a case and drive modified to fit whatever, it would keep your whatever crankin' for a good long, time. If it ever broke the wrecking yards should be full of cheap replacements (like the Delco alternator) but hey, why be a sissy: just use the hand crank.

I'm not positive but I beleive they are a 12v starter and as you know it won't work with a 6v system.

PHILIPS QUESTION IS STRAIGHT FORWARD, YET NO ONE SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND IT. HOWEVER EVERYONE WANTS TO POST QUESTIONS AND OPINIONS THAT ARE UNRELATED. PHILIP DID NOT ASK FOR A DIAGNOSIS, ADVICE ON TYPING ETIQUETTE OR HOW TO CATCH THE MOST FLIES. HE JUST WANTED OPINIONS FROM THOSE WITH EXPERIENCE WITH THE NIP STARTER. EASY QUESTION. I TOO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN AN ANSWER. HOPE PHILIP GETS SOME.

IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU COME ON HERE AND SHOUT AND STAMP YOUR FEET AND DEMAND ONLY RELEVENT ANSWERS TO OBSCURE QUESTIONS, THEN YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF RIGHT TO GET ONLY PRECISE ANSWERS THAT WILL KEEP YOU FROM TRYING TO THINK OR WASTE YOUR MONEY.THEN YOU CAN GET SURLY WITH ANYBODY WHO DOESN'T GROVEL AT YOUR FEET. I SAY SPEND YOUR OWN BUCKS AND FIND OUT THE WAY THE REST OF DO. THE GUY ASKED FOR OPINIONS GOOD OR BAD, BUT ONLY FROM THOSE WHO HAD EXPERIENCE WITH SOMETHING MOST FOLKS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. WHY DIDN'T HE GO TO THE NIPPONDENSO REMANUFACTURED GEAR-DRIVE REDUCTION STARTER PAGE?!!!!

If you been around on this tractor board for some years, you would get in a frame of mind that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Be kind to any and all who post a response to your questions. Some will have serious replies, some will have a comical answer, some will even have another question or be off topic. Out of all this....you must sort out the answer to your problem as best you can. Thats the way it is....thats the way it will always be. If you don't find an answer that satisfies you...try another board. A good attitude will get you a lot further in life and your dog will even like you. L8R....Fred OH

I would have to ask why you are interested in a gear reduction starter for an N. A few other things aside, the gear reduction starter spins the motor over faster and *should* start the engine quicker. However, a properly tuned and maintained N will fire up on the first or second roll anyway, so what good would an expensive GR starter due except mask the real problems? If you are having problems starting it, I think your money would be better invested in fixing what is wrong than trying to simply turn it over faster.

Some GR starters are higher quality than OEM so on a high use vehicle they might make sense. I can't see starting an N often enough to justify it for more than bragging rights.

Gear reduction starters turn the engine over slower not faster at least was the case in all of the ones I have come in contact with, that is whay they call them gear reduction. You can put smaller battery cables because they pull less amperage and usually have smaller motors on them.

Don

I had a brain fart and should have said it delivers increased torque through the gear reduction! I considered one a while back for my wifes Cherokee with a 4.0L engine. I did a little research and discovered that the increased start wind up was computer controlled and not a problem with the starter...

That'll teach me to try to think while I'm at work!

You asked for his thoughts, good and bad. Then you chastise him. I am total agreement with his answer. Those of us in Dell's Mind-Reading Class 101 would like to know why you are considering a G/R starter? My friend Ockham would wonder why you are looking for a $100 solution when a 10-cent solution will work. Where do you even get a rebuilt Nippondenso Gear-Reduction starter? Is it 6-volt or 12? What color is it? Inquiring minds want to know.....

How 'bout turn off the caps lock and stop shouting? What do you think the chances are of finding anyone who has put a Nippondenso Gear Reduction starter on an N? I'd say about the same as finding someone who has installed an air conditioner on one....
Why don't you buy it, try and report what you find? That would be helpful to everyone.

at least I know that typing with all caps is rude.

I have no experience with "remanufactured" Nippondenso Gear Reduction starters...just brand new ones and used ones. Sorry.

Did you have a specific question?

Bob, I completeley agree with PHILGA. Sometimes when people are being dense, those unlucky enough to deal with them become frustrated and begin to SHOUT. However it is much ruder to ignore a polite question and twist it to press your own agenda. The 6v. purists on this page are extremely beligerent and never hesitate to do so ad nauseum. PHILIP did ask a specific quetion and you owe him an apology.

It seems that MikeC had experience with the starter. Was he supposed to post his resume? I think that if someone is courteous enough to post a response, PHILLIP should have said, "Thank You," whether he liked it or not, instead being surly and sarcastic. Belligerent? I think PHILLIP has that market cornered. He started out shouting. It wasn't in response to anything. I suppose that if someone DEMANDS an answer, we must aquiesce.

Philip,
I do have experience with GR starters which is why I elaborated on the previous post. I also wanted to try to make sure that the information that I gave you was accurate and understanding why you are condsidering a GR is a big step in helping you with the solution. If you prefer not to have dialog about it or prefer that the answers were limited to 3 words or less please say so and I'll modify my post to something like "BAD IDEA PHILIP". Doesn't really address the issue though, does it?

Mike, Are these starter motors permenent magnet motors? If so changing the direction of current flow through them will change direction of rotation. Ford uses perminent magnet motors in thier starters now. My brother in-laws starter went on his F150 and the Ford garage changed it. He said it seemed to be getting weak and I wondered if the magnets weren't just getting weak and neede recharging. Of course it could have been a brush problem also. I would like to take one apart and check that out.

Just an observation from as a casual observer here PHILIP,... but I doubt that 'EACH OTHER' is who we would be mad at.
There is a bunch of knowledge here, and sometimes asking a question will get another question in return, so as to provide as correct an answer as possible.. The more you give, the more you get.
Have a good one.
