How did your Saturday go?

Mine was tooling right along.
We had the old wood furnace out of the basement and we were getting ready to install the new gas fired unit and I decided that I would just move that old woody a couple more yards away from the house. My Sisters' Farmall H had done beautifully lifting the woody up and out of the celler hatchway so this should be a breeze, right???

third party image

There are more pics at the link below...

My question is...how the HECK do I get that sucker back to the tool shed which is a good 100 yards???

The only thing holding it together is the gas tank and steering shaft as far as I can tell.
I lifted both halves and supported with log chunks so it is not going anywhere and the pressure is off the gas tank and the starter.
The starter is all that stopped it from completely folding and making it an even more 'fun' ride.

Well...Hope your Saturday went a tad better than mine!

PS.....I am also posting this on the Farmall Board.

:-)

Here's my two pennies worth. Take the loader off & discard. Finish taking the tractor apart & then support the "wheel-less" end with a two wheeled car dolly & slowly haul to your shop. Repete for the other end. Like I said, ideas are cheap....DaBrow

When I was a kid we had a Super C with a 2 row cultivator on it. My uncle was cultivating on a slight hillside sideways (not up and down). There had been a "gully washer" rain a couple of days before and left large ruts that he was crossing. The front wheels hit a low spot and the cultivator hit a high spot and split the tractor right behind the radiator.

We ended up borrowing a tow truck and first hauled the front part home, and then went back for the rest. It was about a mile away from the shops and took us the better part of a day to retrieve it.

My engineering experience tells me that the loader is the real culprit; it puts too much force on the torque tube. That loader design broke quite a few tractors, so you aren't alone. Most loaders of that design have been scrapped, which is what you should do with that one or you'll break the tractor again. Get a loader that lifts from above. Find the parts that you need and keep the tractor.

WOW . . . stuff happens. . . And it looked so nice too. Now you really will feel guilty for destroying grandmas tractor. What a quest, finding a Farmall H tractor skeleton, an all winter project. Yeah, you need to shelter it somehow so you're motovated to work on it. I think I'd finish disassembling it, and roll/drag the remains back to the tool shed..... .... the awe struck Dell

How about lowering the loader to the ground. Then
jack up the center of the tractor and putting a plank across the loader arms and under the tractor
to support it. It should then be able to be dragged backwards using the bucket as a skidplate.

Salmoneye,

Bummer! I have a cadaver '44 H that should have the parts you need. Depending how close you are to northern Ohio, come and get it...it's yours.

Time for a new tool shed...Clear the trees away and build one around the tractor..

Actually thought of that.

Not a shed, but one of those 'portable' structures.
I have a 'tarp' for one that is 40x40 foot.
Now all I need are poles and the sides...

Don't know if it's still in the archives, but there was an interesting discussion a while back about building a temporary structure, using ½" plastic pipe. You run two pieces on the ground, parallel and with your "H" in the middle of them. Cut both sections at the same place at several points and insert "T" connectors with the open connector facing up, and reassemble and glue. Use additional pieces of plastic pipe and bend them in a hangar shape (hoop) and connect to the "T" connectors on the ground pieces. Anchor the ground pieces, and attach your tarp over the hoops formed by the bent pieces of pipe. Use the grommet holes to attach em.

fwiw..... ...Ed

Have actually done that on a smaller scale for covering boats for the winter.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Back tp the tool shed for what??
It looks to be a pretty spot, I'd just hold the burial service right there.

LOL

Yeah...
Well...

I almost agree...however...it was purchased new by my Grandmother in 1940.
Only thing we have left of all the equipment that went with the farm.

So I will fix it...and never lift anything heavier than a load of manure ever again.

Dangit...

Salmoneye,
I bought an H several months ago. Both frame rails
were welded extensively just forward of where they
bolt to the block. Must be a weak spot inherent to
this model. I would probably try to remove the loader and put some kind of carriage under the
break(maybe a rear auto axle) and push/pull it to
the shop. Just my idea from afar.
