I rented a 6' box scraper last weekend. I wanted to see how the 8N handled a 6' as well as see if I needed a box blade. Well, long story short, I need a box blade. ;-) I can get a King Kutter for about $400 or a Howse for about $500. I thing the KK's are lower in quality, but am just wondering if the Howse is worth the difference.

Thanks for any experiences you can share.

Arne

I'm new at this game. When would you use a box scraper instead of a regular blade?

Tim..... ..a box blade with scarifiers is more agressive and follows directly behind the tractor and "captures" the soil spoils. A rear blade can be angled to slide the soil/snow off to the side into a row. Each have their advantages, thats why their made. Both can be operated in reverse depending upon the situation..... ....Dell

I have a 6' King Cutter Box Blade, that i purchased new, about three years ago, at Buchheits for about $300 I do quite a bit gravel driveway resurfacing, and dirt work, for people around town, and it seems to work well. I have made my initial investment back with it, so i'm happy.

Thanks for all the help folks! I sure appreciate all the insight. I will look for a better used one, but have six loads of gravel coming in two weeks. I could always rent one again, but figure with as much gravel as I have a box blade would sure be nice to keep it looking good.

Thanks again,

Arne

Arne, I purchased a 6' King Kutter 3 years ago to use on my 8N. The weighted 8N pulls the 6' fine, but I am somewhat unhappy with the quality of the King Kutter box. I have had to weld half of the pin keepers due to very poor welding at the factory. Philip.

I'm very happy with my 6' Howse on my 52 8N. It was the cheapest one I could find, but it was heavier duty than more expensive ones. Make sure you get a box blade that is 6 inches or so wider than the tractors rear wheels on both sides. My father-in-law bought a 5' to save money on his tractor and now wishes he bought a 6'. And check out how the scarfires are held in place. Some use pins and keepers, others use drop in pins.(I like drop ins)

Does your Howse have the hinged rear Blade? If so, can you pin the rear blade in place?

Thanks,

Arne

When it comes to Price verses Quality, I will choose quality every time. When time has past, the money is gone but you still have the tool.

Anybody got any relative weights of these different brands in the 6 foot variety??

Here I've got a choice between Ag-Meier and TSC cheapo. I want a 6 footer, too, but I haven't seen any bargains on used ones (only about $50 cheaper that I've seen.)

My Hydraulics are a bit on the weenie side, so I'd like to go a little lighter and add meat if'n I have to later.

If you gotta have one NOW, then it looks like you need to make a decision between the new ones available to you. I don't have any experience with either brand, but my impression is that they are both on the "economy" end of the scale in terms of price and quality. So, I'd go look at both and compare thickness of the steel, quality of the welds, presence and thickness of bracing pieces, etc.

Here's what I did: I wasn't in a hurry so I waited for a good quality used box to come available. Ended up paying $400 for a used 6' LandPride. Except when I got there I found it was really a 7' LandPride. The seller honored the price he quoted and I'm happy with it. It's really heavy and stout. Works well with my 850. New list price on that LandPride is over $800. My thought was, "I don't need $400 worth of paint".

I own a KK 6ft box blade. Very happy with it. I inspect everything before I buy. Look at fit, make sure the pins all fit and work-line up, look at the welds etc. I also own Woods products. In deciding what NAME I will buy depends to me on how much use or abuse it will go thru. A product I plan to use a few times a year, a "brand name" and the price tag may not be as essential as a tool I will use often. regardless of which "name" you buy, inspect it thouroghly before you take it off the lot. A feww hundred bucks savings on a lightly used tool can go towards a "name" tool of a heavily used product. So far I have been very happy with both the woods and KK products I own.
